Duck-bill check valves are commonly used for river outfalls at wastewater treatment plants, as well as for stormwater outlets where one-way service is required.
Similar to
flap gates, duckbill check valves allow flow in one direction only. Duck-bill check valves seal themselves more tightly, since they are made of rubber or rubberized materials which seal tightly.
Flap gates, on the other hand, are designed to leak without any significant differential head pressure behind them.
Duck-bill check valves have some additional advantages for service in outfall and overflow applications, too. They are non-slamming, leading to quiet operation, and are generally very good for corrosion resistance (where required). They're also very good for preventing backflow intrusion, even at high pressures.
