Colorado salmonella outbreak sickens more than 200 people
March 25, 2008
More than
200 people have become sick in Alamosa, Colorado, where a problem with the public water supply has led to a salmonella outbreak.
Such outbreaks are rare in America's
public water supplies, but their very rarity should encourage us to ensure that we're spending enough on our drinking-water infrastructure. Disinfection methods like
chlorination and
ultraviolet light are quite effective at ensuring the quality of the water as it leaves the municipal plant, but without
effective water-quality monitoring and a well-maintained distribution system, the safety of what comes out of the tap cannot be guaranteed. Many cities are still using the same water-distribution pipes that were
installed 100 years ago.
