Heavy rains force sewer bypasses in Milwaukee
April 5, 2007
Milwaukee's
405-million-gallon "deep tunnel" system of wastewater and stormwater storage was overwhelmed by heavy rains on April 3rd, causing an
unmeasured volume of untreated wastewater to flow into the city's rivers as well as Lake Michigan. The overflow highlights the ongoing problem many cities have with issues like combined-sewer separation and
stormwater detention.
