DNR may impose major restrictions on land application of sludge
May 15, 2006
Manure is widely used as a crop fertilizer due to its high nitrogen content, but Iowa's DNR is concerned that high levels of nitrates in the state's water are being caused by over-application. Now, staff at the Environmental Protection Commission are calling for a
prohibition on land application of manure on soybean fields. This could radically change the nature of wastewater management on Iowa's farms, since roughly
half of the major acreage here is devoted to soybeans, and taking that land out of service will require making much different use of our existing biosolids.
