Davenport Stuck in Fight Over Stormwater Fee
February 17, 2006
The city council voted to
repeal a stormwater fee, but the mayor's planning to veto their decision. The state of Iowa, meanwhile, is planning to
impose tougher standards on all kinds of wastewater and stormwater treatment, because the state hasn't ever really fully enforced the Clean Water Act. The statewide dispute now is over who's really to blame for the failure:
Non-point source pollution, like
farm fertilizer runoff, or point-specific sources, like wastewater plants.

Nebraska Governor Calls Water "Issue of the Decade"
February 17, 2006
Governor Heineman says the most pressing detail now is
Nebraska's agreement with Kansas to share the Republican River, but other big questions -- like whether Wyoming users might start
recharging the Platte River with methane-tainted water -- are still out there. Nebraska's heavy use of water for irrigation is also an
energy issue, since inefficient pumps, motors, and engines mean
85% of Nebraska irrigators are using more energy than they should.
