Ice jams cause flooding near Grand Island
December 27, 2010
Ice jams along the Platte River have caused
evacuations of a few homes near Grand Island, Nebraska, and
some roads have been closed as a result. The National Weather Service office serving the area thinks that
additional ice jams could last for days.
Winter flooding due to ice jams is always a possibility in our part of the country, which is why we recommend that communities always be prepared with
flood-fighting pumps,
portable dams, and long-term
stormwater-control measures so that emergencies don't catch them in a bad position.
