Will the Ogallala Aquifer survive the biofuels boom?
March 14, 2008
The
growth in biofuels demand as mandated by the latest energy bill is going to drive
lots of new demand for
ethanol from corn as well as from other sources over the coming two decades. But producing that ethanol will require lots of water, including from places where water is scarce. That's likely to put
considerable pressure on the Ogallala Aquifer, upon which much of Nebraska relies.
