Colorado legislators want to sacrifice a lake to keep up on water obligations to Nebraska
January 22, 2008
The Colorado state senate is holding meetings on a plan to drain the
Bonny Reservoir in the
far eastern part of the state in order to
meet Colorado's obligations to Nebraska and Kansas under the
Republican River Compact. Colorado fish and wildlife officials object to the plan, saying it will
sacrifice good recreational ground and kill too much wildlife, but the state needs to find one way or another of achieving compliance with its legal obligations to supply
water, even in the midst of a long-lingering drought.
