Average year for snowpack won't be enough to bring Lake Mac up to normal
January 9, 2008
Nebraska's
Lake McConaughy, the
largest reservoir in the state, is sitting at just 34% of normal capacity, and even with a normal year's worth of winter precipitation (which looks like all that the upriver region is going to get), the lake will probably only be at
about 41% of capacity by the time irrigation season arrives. Western and central Nebraska
remain stuck in a long-term drought, making
clean, safe drinking water more valuable than in places where it remains naturally plentiful.
