Change a light, but change to the right kind
December 17, 2007
The EPA has been
encouraging Americans to replace their light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL's) as a way to reduce energy consumption. While compact fluorescents are efficient, they also
contain hazardous chemicals (which means you can't just throw them away in the regular garbage -- the mercury alone puts our
water supplies at risk) and
put off a light that can be irritating to many people. A better option for replacing conventional incandescent bulbs -- and still getting the natural, pleasing light we've come to expect -- is to switch to
LED-based light bulbs. They cost more than ordinary bulbs up front, but they last far longer and
save hundreds of dollars in energy over a lifetime of use.
