Ethanol producers want their water use put into perspective
December 14, 2007
Ethanol plants use lots of
clean water in order to produce fuel. That water consumption, though, is
a point of concern to some of those who live in areas where water is in short supply, like western Nebraska -- as well as in water-rich places like Iowa, where
little regulatory oversight has been applied to water consumption for ethanol production. The Nebraska Corn Board, among others, wants people to consider the other side of the coin, which is that even larger amounts of water are consumed in the process of refining crude oil.
