Costs of flood damage likely to get worse with time
November 20, 2007
Britain is still reeling from a
serious flood scare earlier this month that nearly turned catastrophic when stresses on flood defenses were pushed to their limits as a storm surge met a high tide across part of the coast. As people around the world
migrate to urban areas and
over-build along coastlines (as well as riverfronts and lakes), the costs of flooding will certainly grow with time, despite our best efforts to
manage stormwater through
gates, levees,
flood-control pumps, and other civil works.
