Massive monsoon flooding kills thousands in India

Even though monsoon-related flooding is a regular event in the Indian subcontinent, that makes it no less dangerous: flooding in eastern India has taken a large number of lives this season. Sophisticated stormwater-management techniques tend to be too expensive for developing countries, at least for now, but they're an important reason why flood-related deaths are much less common in the United States.
