Risk to Ogallala Aquifer from climate change
July 5, 2007
A
report from the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that even a slight overall increase in global temperatures could significantly hamper the total amount of snowpack that accumulates in the Rocky Mountains, which would consequently put a massive strain on the
Ogallala Aquifer, which is a primary source of groundwater for most of Nebraska. The continued
rapid depletion of the aquifer puts much of the Plains region at risk for critical water shortages.
