Trees create environmental Catch-22 for Nebraska

The health of rivers like the Platte and Republican is central to much of Nebraska's ability to maintain a stable agricultural and industrial economy - but competition for the river water comes from many sources, including Kansas, which has a major legal claim to the Republican River. Yet there's also serious competition from
a couple of invasive tree species which sprout up along the riverbanks and draw heavily from the passing flows. This puts environmental-minded people in a conundrum: Is it better to sacrifice the trees or to give up on some of the crucial natural resources (like water) that make human prosperity possible?
