Lawn-watering advice: Get the soil, not the plant

In the midst of dry weather, many people water their lawns to keep those lawns from dying. But important basic advice about watering is often ignored:
Water the soil, not the plant. That means soaking the ground at night or in the early morning, not splashing a few drops on the grass blades in the middle of the day.
