Springtime Brings Heavy Runoff
April 24, 2006
Places like western New York, which haven't had much rain over the last few months, are suddenly
getting lots of rain at once. This leads to a number of problems, including urban and small stream flooding, road washouts, and high levels of stormwater runoff. The EPA categorizes the pollutants carried by stormwater runoff as
non-point-source pollution, and the rules on treating it are tougher than ever and certain to become even more so with time. Construction sites now have to use a variety of
geomembranes in order to contain runoff, and many new buildings are being required to contain their own stormwater in order to cut down on the amount of untreated water that returns to lakes and streams.
