Legislative Committee Won't Block Tougher Water Standards in Iowa
March 14, 2006
Iowa's DNR has announced stricter water-quality standards for point-source pollution (the kind that comes from
municipal wastewater treatment plants). The DNR thinks the
cost of compliance could be as high as $1 billion for the wastewater plants in the state, though the new rules don't affect the non-point-source pollution (like agricultural runoff) that's believed to be responsible for
80% or more of the state's water pollution. The Administrative Rules Review Committee, which oversees the new rules,
decided not to block them, so unless the Legislature acts to reverse the rules, they'll
go into effect next week.
