January One of Warmest, Driest on Record
February 7, 2006
For parts of Nebraska, January was the
warmest ever recorded, as well as one of the driest. But fortunately, the Rockies have captured above-average amounts of snow, so there's a chance the very dry conditions could be redeemed as spring approaches. Areas like Kearney are trying to
capture river water right now to make up for previous years' low flows. Western and central Nebraska are
heavy-irrigation areas, and the presence (or lack) of water has a huge effect on the economy. The
draining of the Ogallala Aquifer has radically changed water supplies and pumping demands in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
